Teaching mural design is about broadening the student's mind to create for the community, to take ownership and to become stewards for what they have achieved...
A MURAL is a work of art that is created for a particular site so that it is incorporated into the architecture. The forces of its surroundings influence the composition.
The ENVIRONMENT should bring people together agreeably for some purpose.
It should EVOKE some kind of response . . . joy, amusement, sorrow, beauty, fear, awe.
The DESIGN needs to have some kind of meaning ... self-expression, opinion, and/or social view . . .
It should bring AESTHETIC SATISFACTION that comes with repetition and patterns in the design with unexpected fluctuations and changes to make it interesting and therefore pleasurable.
I really enjoyed conducting these projects. It was a lot of work from planning to execution but very rewarding in the end!
